Texas electrician CE must collectively cover four mandatory subject areas: the National Electrical Code, Texas electrical law (Occupations Code Chapter 1305), administrative rules (16 TAC Chapter 73), and electrical safety (NFPA 70E). TDLR requires the coverage, not a fixed hour-by-hour split.
The catch known as the NEC-only rule: if you take 4 hours of NEC-only content, you must complete an additional approved course — at least 1 hour — covering law, rules, or NFPA 70E safety before your CE is complete. Four hours of pure code study does not satisfy the requirement on its own.
This matters when shopping for courses, because NEC-update courses are popular — especially around a code transition like the September 1, 2026 switch to the 2026 NEC — and it's easy to assume any 4 approved hours will do.
