Many Texas electricians hold more than one license — a Journeyman who also keeps a Maintenance Electrician license, or a Master who also holds Master Sign. TDLR's rule for them is simple: you need 4 total hours of continuing education, not 4 hours per license.
Two conditions attach:
- Timing — the hours must be completed during the license period being renewed (between your last renewal and the upcoming expiration)
- No repeats — you cannot complete the same course more than once for credit (16 TAC §73.25(e))
The rule works because all 10 individual electrical license types share one identical CE requirement: 4 hours covering the NEC, Texas law and rules, and NFPA 70E safety. The same approved 4-hour course satisfies an Apprentice, a Journeyman Lineman, and a Master Sign Electrician alike.
Note the related business-license nuance: the Electrical Contractor license needs no CE at all, but its Master of Record must complete their own individual 4 hours.
What it means for your renewal
The trap isn't the hour count — it's timing. Hours only count if they're completed during the license period being renewed, so knock out your 4 hours early in each cycle. One course, $22.95, no final exam, reported to TDLR within 24 hours.
