How Texas Continuing Education Works

Texas cosmetologists, barbers, electricians, and HVAC contractors must complete continuing education to keep their licenses active. Here's what you need to know — and how we make it easy.

The Requirement

What is TDLR Continuing Education?

Understanding your CE requirements is the first step toward keeping your license current.

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) requires licensed professionals to complete continuing education (CE) hours before renewing their license. This ensures that practitioners stay current on safety practices, industry standards, and state regulations.

CE requirements apply to cosmetologists, barbers, estheticians, manicurists, electricians, and HVAC/ACR contractors. The number of hours varies by profession — typically 4 to 8 hours per renewal cycle. A few exceptions: barbering and cosmetology licensees who have held their license 15 or more years need only 2 hours, apprentice electricians can substitute enrollment in a TDLR-registered apprenticeship program, and ACR technicians (unlike licensed contractors) have no CE requirement.

Courses must be taken from a TDLR-approved provider. OnlineTexasCE.com is an official TDLR-approved CE provider (Provider #2273), so your hours count toward your renewal requirements.

Q.02Who needs to complete CE in Texas?

The number of hours varies by profession — typically 4 to 8 hours per cycle.
