NFPA 70E, the Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace, is the safety companion to the National Electrical Code. Where the NEC governs how electrical systems are installed, NFPA 70E governs how people work on or near them safely. It also outlines methods for complying with OSHA's electrical safety requirements (29 CFR 1910 Subpart S and 1926 Subpart K).
In Texas electrician CE, NFPA 70E content is integrated throughout your 4 annual hours rather than standing alone as a separate hour. Topics include:
- Arc flash fundamentals — boundaries, incident energy, and mitigation strategies
- Safe work practices — lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures and energized work permits
- PPE selection — task-based personal protective equipment planning
- Hazard identification and risk assessment, and obtaining an electrically safe work condition
- How the human body reacts to electric current, and the hazards of shock, flash, and blast
TDLR requires that your CE cover electrical safety along with NEC content and Texas law and rules — an NEC-only course does not satisfy the full requirement on its own.
