The Journeyman Electrician license is the standard worker-level electrical license in Texas, issued by TDLR under the Texas Electrical Safety and Licensing Act. To qualify, you must complete 8,000 hours of on-the-job training under a licensed Master Electrician and pass the TDLR journeyman exam — Texas electrical licensing exams had an overall pass rate of just 23.5% in fiscal year 2025 (share of exam attempts), which makes keeping the license you already earned far easier than ever retaking the test.
A Journeyman can perform electrical work on residential, commercial, and industrial projects anywhere in the state. Your TDLR license is valid in every Texas city — no city can require a separate municipal exam, though some may require local registration.
Keeping the license active requires:
- 4 hours of TDLR-approved CE every year, covering the NEC, Texas electrical law and rules, and NFPA 70E safety
- $30 annual renewal fee, due on the anniversary of your issuance date
Late renewal costs $45 within 90 days and $60 from 91 days to 18 months — and still $60 from 18 months to 3 years, with TDLR executive-director approval. After 3 years expired, you cannot renew — you must reapply as a new applicant and face the exam again.
