The Journeyman Lineman license is one of three specialized journeyman licenses TDLR issues alongside the standard Journeyman Electrician (the others are Journeyman Industrial Electrician and Journeyman Sign Electrician). It authorizes utility line work and requires 8,000 hours of line work experience plus a passing score on the TDLR exam.
For renewal purposes, the Journeyman Lineman follows the same rules as every other individual electrical license in Texas:
- Annual renewal on the anniversary of your issuance date, with a $30 renewal fee
- 4 hours of TDLR-approved CE every year, covering the NEC, Texas electrical law and rules, and NFPA 70E safety
- Late fees of $45 within 90 days and $60 from 91 days to 18 months (still $60 to 3 years, with TDLR executive-director approval) — and after 3 years expired, you must reapply as a new applicant
If you hold the Lineman license alongside another electrical license type, you only need 4 total CE hours — not 4 per license — completed during the license period being renewed.
What it means for your renewal
Line work doesn't exempt you from the standard CE cycle — TDLR requires the same 4 hours from every individual license holder, every year. The course is the same one Journeymen and Masters take: $22.95, no final exam, and your completion is reported to TDLR within 24 hours.
