The hair weaving specialist license authorizes hair additions and extension services: sew-in weaves, bonded extensions, tape-in extensions, fusion extensions, braiding with added hair, and related techniques using both natural and synthetic hair. It sits under TDLR's unified Barbering and Cosmetology program alongside the other specialty licenses.
Earning it requires a Hair Weaving Specialist course of 300 hours of instruction at a Texas-licensed barbering/cosmetology school, then the written and practical exams and a $50 application fee. (TDLR also offers a combined Hair Weaving Specialist/Esthetician license — 300 weaving hours plus 750 esthetician hours.) Maintenance follows the standard practitioner pattern:
- $50 renewal fee every 2 years, on the anniversary of your issuance date
- 4 hours of TDLR-approved CE each cycle — 1 hour of sanitation, 1 hour of human trafficking prevention, and 2 elective hours (2 hours total once you have held the license 15+ years)
The specialty's health considerations are real: proper technique and sanitation prevent scalp damage, traction alopecia, and allergic reactions to adhesives or synthetic fibers — and recognizing the conditions that require medical referral is part of working safely. What it means for your renewal
There is no separate hair-weaving CE course to hunt down — all barbering and cosmetology subtypes complete the same TDLR-approved 4-hour course before renewing. Finish it ahead of your expiration date: late renewal raises the fee to $75 (expired 90 days or less) or $100 (more than 90 days) instead of the normal $50.
