The eyelash extension specialist license is one of the newer categories in TDLR's Barbering and Cosmetology program. It authorizes the application of semi-permanent eyelash extensions — individual lash application, cluster lashes, and volume techniques.
Earning it requires completing an Eyelash Extension Specialist course of 320 hours of instruction at a TDLR-licensed school — the shortest school path in the program, against 750 hours for estheticians and 1,000 for operators — then passing the written and practical exams and paying the $50 application fee. From there it is maintained like any practitioner license in the program:
- $50 renewal every 2 years, on the anniversary of issuance
- 4 hours of TDLR-approved CE per cycle — the same shared course all subtypes take (2 hours once you have held the license 15+ years)
Safety drives this specialty's rules. Improper application or unsanitary practice around the eye can cause infections, allergic reactions, corneal damage, and permanent lash loss — and TDLR enforces the details: a 2026 administrative order against a Richmond nail salon cited, among other violations, failure to store eyelash extensions in a sealed bag or covered container.
What it means for your renewal
Lash specialists renew on the same cycle and CE requirement as every other cosmetology license — no special hours, no separate course. Complete the 4 hours before renewing, and keep your certificate for 2 years — the retention period for barbering and cosmetology licensees.
The eyelash extension CE course is $22.95 with no final exam, and your completion is reported to TDLR within 24 hours.
