Texas ACR contractors must complete 8 hours of continuing education every year, and TDLR dictates how one of those hours is spent: 1 mandatory hour on the Texas laws and rules regulating ACR licensees — Texas Occupations Code Chapter 1302 (the ACR Contractor License Law) and Title 16, Texas Administrative Code, Chapter 75.
The remaining 7 hours are flexible. Approved topics include:
- International Mechanical Code (IMC) and Uniform Mechanical Code (UMC), plus other applicable mechanical and building codes
- Safety protocols and procedures
- Refrigerant handling and transitions (including the R-410A to R-454B changeover)
- Energy efficiency standards
- New HVAC technologies and diagnostic techniques and troubleshooting
Two housekeeping rules shape the requirement: you cannot complete the same course more than once for credit, and you should keep your CE completion certificates for 1 year in case TDLR requests them.
The requirement applies to Class A and Class B contractors only — registered and certified technicians have no CE hours at all.
