TDLR & Licensing Basics

Continuing Education (CE)

State-required coursework that licensees in many TDLR programs must complete each renewal cycle to keep their license active.

Continuing education (CE) is the coursework TDLR requires licensees in many of its programs to complete before each license renewal. The requirement keeps Texas professionals current on safety standards, code changes, and legal updates in their trade.

CE hour requirements vary by license: cosmetology and barber licenses require 4 hours every 2 years, electrician licenses require 4 hours every year, and HVAC/ACR contractor licenses require 8 hours every year. CE must be completed through a TDLR-approved provider before you submit your renewal — TDLR will not process a renewal without it.

What it means for your renewal

Complete your CE before your license expires. Courses from a TDLR-approved provider are reported to the state for you — OnlineTexasCE (Provider #2273) reports completions within 24 hours, and there is no final exam.
