TDLR Approved - Cosmetology
Cosmetology and Barber 2 Hour
TDLR-approved 2-hour Texas cosmetology and barber CE for licensees who have held a practitioner license 15 or more years — the sanitation hour and the human trafficking prevention hour, online.
For licensees who have held a Texas practitioner license 15 or more years (16 TAC §83.25(k)) — TDLR applies the rule from its own records when you renew. Licensed under 15 years? You need the 4-hour course. See the 4-hour course
Course Overview
The Texas Cosmetology and Barber 2 Hour course is a TDLR-approved continuing education course for licensees who have held a Texas practitioner license for at least 15 years. For renewals on or after September 1, 2025, 16 TAC §83.25(k) lets those licensees renew on two hours instead of four: 1 hour of sanitation and 1 hour of human trafficking prevention. This course is those two hours. TDLR applies the 15-year rule from its own records when you renew. Licensed less than 15 years? This shorter course won't satisfy your renewal — take our 4-hour course instead.
The two lessons are the first two lessons of our 4-hour course, word for word: Lesson 1, Sanitation, and Lesson 2, Human Trafficking Prevention, which includes the “Be The One” human trafficking awareness video. Each lesson is viewed in full before the next one opens, each ends with one short question, and both lessons are completed before your certificate is issued. The course provides at least 50 minutes of instruction for each CE hour, there is no timer, and you move through it at your own pace.
One course covers cosmetology operators, Class A barbers, estheticians, manicurists, eyelash extension specialists, and hair weaving specialists — any practitioner license held for 15 or more years. Complete it online from your phone, tablet, or computer and your certificate is issued immediately, with completion reported to TDLR.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q.01How many continuing education hours do I need for my Texas cosmetology license?
Texas cosmetology and barber license holders complete 4 hours of TDLR-approved continuing education before each renewal. A licensee who has held a Texas practitioner license 15 or more years may renew on 2 hours instead: 1 hour of sanitation and 1 hour of human trafficking prevention (16 TAC §83.25(k)). This course is that 2-hour option; TDLR applies the rule from its own records when you renew. Licensed under 15 years? Take our 4-hour course.
Q.02Is there a test or exam at the end of the course?
No, there is no final exam. TDLR does not require a test for continuing education. Each lesson must be viewed in full before you move on to the next, and every lesson must be completed before your certificate of completion is issued. The course provides at least 50 minutes of instruction for each CE hour.
Q.03How long do I have to complete the cosmetology CE course?
You have 180 days from enrollment to complete the course. Within that window you can work through the material at your own pace, 24/7 — your progress is saved automatically, so you can pick up right where you left off. You can finish in one or two sittings.
Q.04How is my completion reported to TDLR?
We report your course completion directly to TDLR electronically within 24 hours. You'll also receive a downloadable certificate of completion instantly that you can keep for your records.
Q.05Can I take the cosmetology CE course on my phone or tablet?
Yes! The course is 100% mobile-friendly. You can complete it on any device — phone, tablet, or computer. Your progress syncs across all devices automatically.
Q.06What if my cosmetology license is already expired?
You can still take the course with an expired license. Completing the CE requirement is part of the renewal process. Once you finish the course and we report to TDLR, you can proceed with your license renewal application.
Q.07What topics are covered in the cosmetology CE course?
Two lessons, one for each hour: 1 Sanitation and 2 Human Trafficking Prevention — the first two lessons of our 4-hour course, word for word. It is written for cosmetologists, barbers, hair stylists, estheticians, manicurists, and eyelash and hair weaving specialists who have held a Texas practitioner license 15 or more years.
Q.08What if the course doesn't work out for me?
If you haven't completed the course, we'll refund your purchase in full within 30 days — it's in our terms. TDLR reporting and your certificate are included in the one price; no add-on fees.

This 2-hour course is fully online with no final exam, and we report your hours to TDLR within 24 hours of completion. TDLR requires your CE on file before it completes your renewal. CE hours finished after your expiration date still count toward a late renewal — TDLR accepts hours completed within the 2 years before your actual renewal date (16 TAC §83.25(d)).

Renew with TDLR — on TDLR's site, at TDLR's fee
Renew on TDLRTDLR renewal fees by how late the renewal is When you renew TDLR's fee On time $50 Expired 90 days or less $75 (1.5× the $50 fee) Expired 91 days – 18 months $100 (2× the $50 fee) Expired 18 months – 3 years $100, with TDLR executive director approval Expired 3 years or more Cannot renew — must meet current new-applicant requirements
