Sign Electrician licenses cover the installation, maintenance, and repair of illuminated signs, outline lighting, and associated wiring — the specialty governed by NEC Article 600 (Electric Signs and Outline Lighting). Texas issues the specialty at three levels:
- Apprentice Sign Electrician — entry-level, $20 annual renewal
- Journeyman Sign Electrician — performs sign electrical work under supervision, $30 annual renewal
- Master Sign Electrician — supervises sign work and can serve as the licensee for an Electrical Sign Contractor, $45 annual renewal
All sign electrician licenses renew annually and require 4 hours of TDLR-approved CE per year — and the same 4-hour course satisfies Journeyman Sign, Master Sign, and every other individual electrical license. If you also hold a general electrical license, you still only need 4 total hours.
For sign electricians, the 2023 NEC brought updates to Article 600 and related provisions covering LED drivers, power supplies for outline lighting, and wiring methods for signs.
What it means for your renewal
Both Journeyman Sign and Master Sign holders renew every year, and an Electrical Sign Contractor's license depends on its master's individual license staying active. One 4-hour sign electrician CE course covers both license levels — no final exam, reported to TDLR within 24 hours.
