A cosmetology school license is the TDLR credential for the beauty and barber schools that deliver the training hours behind every practitioner license — the 1,000-hour operator and Class A Barber programs, the 750-hour esthetician program, and the 600-hour manicurist program.
School fees run on their own schedule, well above the $50 practitioner rates:
- $380 initial school application
- $280 on-time renewal
- $420 late renewal — 1.5x the fee (expired 90 days or less)
- $560 late renewal — 2x the fee (expired more than 90 days but less than 18 months; from 18 months to less than 3 years the same 2x fee applies with TDLR executive director approval)
Since HB 1560 eliminated standalone instructor licenses in 2021, a school's instructors each hold a regular practitioner license in the specialty they teach — so a school owner manages the school license while every teacher maintains their own license and CE.
For most working licensees, the school license matters when the career shifts: moving from behind the chair into teaching or school ownership puts you on this fee schedule in addition to your own practitioner renewal.

School licenses renew with TDLR like practitioner licenses but at school rates — and late costs escalate fast ($420–$560 versus $280 on time). The CE requirement, though, never attaches to the school: it follows each individual practitioner license, including yours.
