A CE credit hour is not a clock hour. Under TDLR's continuing education rules, one credit hour equals 50 minutes of actual instruction time. This standard applies across all TDLR programs — cosmetology and barbering, electrical, and air conditioning/refrigeration alike.
In practice, that means:
- A 4-hour course (cosmetology/barber, electrician) = 200 minutes of instruction — 3 hours 20 minutes
- An 8-hour course (ACR contractor) = 400 minutes of instruction — 6 hours 40 minutes
This is why the hour count TDLR records for a course never quite matches the time on your clock, and why different providers' "4-hour" courses can feel different in length. The 50-minute standard defines the minimum instruction content a course must deliver to be approved for that many credit hours; it borrows from the traditional academic hour, which sets aside time for breaks.
The credit hours themselves are set per trade: 4 hours every 2 years for cosmetology and barber licenses, 4 hours every year for electricians, and 8 hours every year for ACR contractors.
What it means for your renewal
Credit is awarded once you complete the approved course along with any required instruction or participation checks it includes; TDLR then records the course's approved hour count — 4 or 8 hours. What matters for your renewal is completing an approved course covering the full credit hours your license requires.
