A2L is the safety classification for refrigerants that are mildly flammable. It covers the refrigerants replacing R-410A in residential HVAC under the EPA AIM Act phase-down:
- R-454B (GWP ~466) — the primary replacement for residential systems
- R-32 (GWP ~675) — an alternative being adopted by some manufacturers
The classification matters because flammability — even "mild" — changes field practice. A2L refrigerants demand updated safety protocols for handling, installation, and service compared with the non-flammable refrigerants most contractors trained on. The cost side is real too: A2L equipment generally costs more because of its safety requirements.
Two compliance notes for Texas licensees: A2L systems cannot be retrofitted from R-410A — the refrigerants are not interchangeable — and A2L safety training is increasingly important but not yet required by the federal EPA Section 608 certification. That gap is exactly why A2L material is becoming central to state continuing education for ACR contractors.
