The Master of Record is the licensed Master Electrician that an Electrical Contractor designates to TDLR. A contracting company cannot legally operate without a Master on record — every electrical contractor business in Texas must employ one.
The role carries responsibilities well beyond the Master's own work:
- The contractor license cannot be renewed if the Master of Record's individual license is expired
- The Master of Record is responsible for supervising all electrical work performed under the contractor license
- They must ensure all employees working under the license hold appropriate individual licenses
This is where CE intersects with business operations. The Electrical Contractor license itself is exempt from continuing education, but the Master of Record must maintain their own individual CE and renewal — 4 hours of TDLR-approved CE per year plus the $45 Master renewal fee, due annually on the anniversary of issuance. The same structure applies to Electrical Sign Contractors and their Master Sign Electricians.
What it means for your renewal
If you're the Master of Record, a missed renewal doesn't just sideline you — the contractor license can't renew while your license is expired, which can shut down an entire contracting operation. Put your CE well ahead of your anniversary date: the 4-hour course has no final exam and is reported to TDLR within 24 hours.
